BLOG: "I am the product of subsidized, affordable housing..."
Sam AdamsThis is a summary of the comments I made at today's City Council meeting regarding the housing resolution that I co-sponsored with Commissioner Erik Sten:
I am the product of subsidized, affordable housing. My single Mom raised four wily and independent kids while she attended college. She was able to do so because of affordable housing programs and other public benefit programs we were fortunate enough to be eligible for...

Bridger Rainwater Garden Grand Opening
Warren JimenezSam attended the grand opening of Bridger Rainwater Garden on Earth Day. After more than five years of hard work, the 12,000-square-foot rainwater garden was recognized by the community. This rolling native plant garden fills the school's center courtyard where there used to be a sea of barren asphalt. Once the plants are fully rooted, the garden will be fed by stormwater runoff from its roof. By returning this water to the earth's groundwater through natural filtration, the garden will help divert almost 300,000 gallons a year from our sewer systems. Here are Sam's comments from the event...

Driver Distraction Causes Accidents
Sam AdamsWhile I care deeply about creating a cost-effective, environmentally-friendly transportation system that supports a healthy and dynnamic economy and healthy, livable neighborhoods, safety is my number one priority. I believe that one fatality on the road is one too many. That is why I held Portland's first Transportation Safety Summit to get people focused on ways that we can make Portland's streets safer for bicyclists, pedestrians, and motorists alike.

Bicycle Expenditures with Some Context
Guest AuthorFrom time to time, we ask city staff members and others to write on subjects on behalf of the office. For this article, we asked Paul Smith, a Planning Manager at the Portland Office of Transportation, to write about a recent budget analysis he performed on Sam's request. The findings are rather striking...

Five organizations - City Club of Portland, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance, the League of Women's Voters, Money in Politics Research Action Project, and ROSE Community Development - turned in their registration to the City Auditor, urging all organizations and businesses who lobby the city to register and comply with the city's regulation, which took effect on April 1...

Neighborhood Parking Benefit Program
Warren JimenezThe Neighborhood Parking Benefit Program (NPBP) is a parking management tool for growing business districts designed to charge market-based cost for on-street parking and return the net revenue generated to the metered districts for transportation improvements of their choice. Sam initiated this program to help business districts manage on-street parking to support economic vitality by encouraging parking turnover, improving circulation, maintaining air quality and promoting the use of alternative modes. In addition to economic vitality, the NPBP is designed to protect neighborhood livability by minimizing impacts on surrounding residents caused by spillover and commuter parking...

BLOG: Fixed Costs on Tram Contracts and More Funding for Affordable Housing, Parks and Transportation Are Reasons Why I Voted to Move Forward SoWa
Sam AdamsMy comments today at the Portland City Council meeting today: I am pleased—and yes, a little bit relieved—to support this resolution. This is not necessarily the easiest resolution to support, as it represents an agreement that is less than perfect. However, at the end of the day, it’s one that has earned my support. As the stakeholders will attest, I have been a demanding participant on behalf of taxpayers during these negotiations. But I’m convinced this is the right thing to do...

The City should extend its equal benefits law
Jesse BeasonLet me tell you about Kelly and Dolores. They've been a family for 17 years. While Dolores works as an electrician, Kelly stays at home to care for their 4-year-old son, Avery, and newborn baby girl, Evan. Dolores' health care policy covers employees, married spouses, biological children, stepchildren, adopted children and anyone an employee is caring for such as siblings, parents, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. But the policy does not cover domestic partners. It does not cover Kelly, her partner of nearly two decades. This is wrong...

Go "Recon"figure
Sam AdamsThe Portland Public Schools Configuration Strategy has been proposed to the school board by Superintendent Phillips. Stark questions rise to the surface: school closures or reconfigurations? Will the newly reconfigured schools be K-8 models, or will young kids be put in with older, middle schoolers? Are schools of between 400-600...

EPA Overflows with Enforcement
