Alice B. Toeclips
The Office
On Saturday night, Sam had the opportunity to speak at the Bicycle Transportation Association's annual awards dinner and auction. After riding in on a Trek Portland, Commissioner Adams praised the BTA for their dedication to bicycle safety and their commitment to help lead Portland to be the first large city to receive the Platinum Award from the League of American Bicyclists.
Sam also highlighted a number of bicycle related businesses in Oregon that have helped brings jobs to our communities including: King Cycle Group,Yakima; and Burly, as well as individuals such as Shaun Deller and Sasha White who have made careers out of Portland's desire for quality cycling products made close to home.
Without the dedication of the BTA, it is hard to imagine that Portland would have made it this far, and Sam's office and the Portland Office of Transportation will continue to count on their independent and cooperative efforts as we work toward a Platinum rating. Also, at the awards dinner, was Representative Earl Blumenauer who honored the author of Oregon's Bicycle Bill, Don Stathos, who passed away on October 20, 2005. We were all reminded of how much we owe to the bicycle advocates who came before us, how far we have come from the early days of bicycle policymaking, and how close we are to realizing our goal of safe, bicycle-friendly streets.
Congratulations to Alice award winners: Jackie Dingdfelder; Eileen Adee; Jeff Bernards; Lillie Fitzpatrick; Jim Lawrence; Darren Pennington; and Amy Wantulok. The hard work of all of these individuals is sincerely appreciated. Also honored was Brita Johnson, the BTA's Program Director and Volunteer Coordinator who is leaving the organization. She will be missed by the entire cycling community.
Over 600 people were in attendance and the both the silent and live auctions helped make the BTA's most substantial fundraiser a huge success.
