Img_0990From train whistles to race cars, Sam is an intimate neighbor to urban noise issues. This morning, Sam addressed the Port of Portland Commission on the cargo plane (box haulers) noise issue. He applauded the work of the Citizen's Noise Advisory Committee (CNAC), the ad hoc noise committee, the Port, FAA, Portland's noise office and the many neighbors who worked to disperse noise in Northeast Portland.

Yet again North Portland is the dumping ground for the noise pollution of urban living. As a resident of the Overlook neighborhood I wish voice my objection the proposed flight path over a residential area already fighting noise of the train yard, Swan Island and I-5 traffic. When will the city share the urban burden with parts like the S.W. neighborhoods.

Sam,
Suggested flight paths are just fine, but in anything much above a five knot wind, aircraft have to take off and land into the wind. Are you talking about approach paths, or landing paths?
Thanks,
Dave

Robert:

I live in SW Portland (near Lewis & Clark College) and we are in the normal landing pattern for PDX.

Admittedly, landings are quieter than takeoffs, but that doesn't mean they are without noise (especially if you're trying to sleep!).

It seems unrealistic to suggest that aircraft noise can be arbitrarily directed towards (or away from) certain neighborhoods. The closer a plane gets to the airport (on takeoff or landing) the lower (and louder) it's going to get. It's not some kind of "punish the working man" conspiracy.
