Portland’s African American Community in City Hall.

THURSDAY, MARCH 2nd, from 5pm-7pm
Portland City Hall, 1221 SW 4th Avenue

Portland’s City Council welcomes you to come and share in the celebration of Black History month with artwork by Portland artists of color. The March 2nd show combines visual art and performance to create a family- oriented and community-based night of fun. This free event is open to the public and is in partnership with City Council, several local organizations, artists, and performers in celebrating the African American Community in City Hall.

Artists from the United Way Art of Change Gallery:

- Monica Lester-Bell, Featured Artist

- Sharon Martini
- Simply “Mo”
- Sylvia E. Welch
- Ken Boston
- Eldon Jones III
- Sunshine Dixon

Performances include:

- Nigerian Ibo Tribe—“Masquerade Dance”
- Harold Williams II spoken word performer
- Kim Holt, student at Portland's Grant High School and a member of Self Enhancement, Inc.
- "Martin", a short play inspired by the life of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

ART OF CHANGE GALLERY OPEN FOR MARCH 2, “FIRST THURSDAY”
United Way’s “Art of Change Gallery” will be open to visitors for the March 2, First Thursday.
Featuring a new series of works from local artists, as well as music and food, the show will
be open from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. The United Way building is located at 619 Southwest 11th
Avenue.
The “Art of Change” show has over 20 artists with their work on display and for sale. In
addition to the art, two music performances at 6:30 and 7:30 will be given by Thara
Memory’s American Music Program – Pacific Crest Jazz Combo. These students in grades 8-
12, are recognized as unique individuals with something to offer the entire group both as
musicians and people. The combo members are: Grammy Band & Next Generation Band
member, Stephanie Baird on trombone, Ian Christensen on tenor sax, Hailey Niswanger on
alto sax & clarinet, Sam Stidham on bass, Anthony Polson on drums, and Down Beat
Magazine Musician of the Year and recording artist, Grant Richards on piano.
