Sight Range: A Desert Storm Exhibit
Jesse Beason

I think John Movius, the artist responsible for Sight Range ought to do the talking:
"In February 2003, while working on a photography project, I began searching for images taken during the first Gulf War. I was interested in the blurry, night-vision green images that were part of the TV news coverage in 1991, and wanted to incorporate them into the project.
"At the time, I could not locate any of the night-vision images, but what I did find intrigued me more: websites about Desert Storm created by veterans of the conflict. These websites included a vast array of photographs documenting the first Gulf War, taken by the soldiers themselves. The pictures were fascinating—they fell somewhere between photojournalism and everyday snapshots...
"It was difficult at first to find people who were both willing to meet with a stranger and lend that stranger their personal photographs. The four people I ended up meeting had diverse stories and geographic backgrounds, which was important to me. I traveled to Oregon, Pennsylvania and Florida to meet Asher, Tracie and Tyrone. Before a trip to Texas to meet William, he sadly succumbed to a brain tumor. His wife, Michele, agreed to share his story and images.
"The prints exhibited are digital enlargements of standard 4x6 snapshots I borrowed from the veterans...The text is excerpted from hours of recorded conversation during our meetings in 2003 and 2004, and the titles of each photo, unless otherwise noted, are the photographers’ own."

Jesse,
Thank you for including this exciting exhibit at the IFCC. This Saturday 2/11 at 5:30 there will be a Free talk back with the artists. John Movius the curator and an excellent photographer himself will be there along with one of the soldiers, the graffiti artist and representatives from Insight Out- the company producing the play in the theatre. Should make for lively discussion of art, masculinity, and gender roles.
