Citizen Review of Noisy Cargo flights Takes Off
Maria Thi Mai
Early in 2005, Fred Stovel, Erwin Bergman, and Robin Denberg asked us for help on addressing the long-standing issue of cargo airplane noise.
Sam staffers Maria Thi Mai and Gordon Johnston brought together a group of citizens which in tandem with the Port of Portland became known as the Air Cargo Noise ad hoc Committee.
Sam and the Port asked the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to test-pilot alternative flight routes away from highly-impacted neighborhoods. Turboprop Cargo Carriers (boxhaulers) AmeriFlight and Fed Ex/Empire Airlines volunteered their pilots and planes to this test day. Nearly 30 citizens joined in supervising the Saturday test flights (pictured above). FAA has stated it will pilot these alternatives early 2006.
