Vocation Vacation (pseudo)

Thursday, September 22nd marked the Office of Transportation Maintenance’s 15th annual Field Day event. This year, more than 100 "field workers" put on a hardhat and bright orange safety vests to fulfill their public works dreams. From spreading hot asphalt on roadways to cleaning storm drains, everyone gained a better understanding of how the City of Portland maintains our roads and sewers.
Here’s what a few of this year’s participants said about their day:
"Loved meeting workers and hearing their stories – great to connect with the people, resources of the City. Thank you!"
"I enjoyed this as a citizen…Loved cross bureau conversations and getting acquainted with people who are behind the scenes..."
"Ask neighborhood board members and citizens to join you, too. Helps us to understand your work. A real eye opener."
Field Day means a lot to the men and women who maintain the City’s infrastructure. They look forward each year to demonstrating their skills and telling their story during Field Day. It gives them an opportunity to illustrate why they feel so strongly about the Bureau’s motto – Maintaining Portland…it’s a matter of pride.
