Task force will explore options for sidewalk dumpsters

Council passed a resolution on September 28, 2005, introduced by Sam and Commissioner Saltzman, forming a collaborative work group to explore potential options for removing dumpsters from city sidewalks. The work group will bring together business interests, city employees and citizens. The city's ombudsman, Michael Mills, approached Sam with the idea of an exploratory work group, after extensively studying this issue and looking into citizen concerns.
"The longer you wait to solve this problem, the harder it will be in the future to solve," said Mills.
The issue of sidewalk dumpsters is complicated, weighing the ability of a business to handle waste on its property with various health and safety concerns of the community. For instance, dumpsters have been deemed as one of the top causes of preventable fire by the Fire Bureau. However, the city does not require developers to provide adequate on site space for garbage.
The collaborative work group, representing all interests, will carefully study and discuss the issue. They have one year to report back to Council.
