Portland Race for the Cure Draws 45,000
Sam Adams
Wow! 45,000 people walk this morning in the 14th annual Portland Race for the Cure to benefit the The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation of Oregon. This makes Portland’s Race for the Cure one of the biggest Races in the United States.
The Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36.
Today, the Foundation is an international organization with a network of more than 70,000 volunteers working through local Affiliates and Komen Race for the Cure® events to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment.
In conjunction with race for the cure, this month, my office is cosponsoring “Up Close in Pink” an art show in the atrium of Portland’s City Hall, 1221 SW 4th Avenue.
The exhibit, in its fourth year, includes 14 works by 9 artists who've been affected by breast cancer. They include survivors, family and friends.
The Komen Foundation runs one of the most innovative, responsive grant programs in breast cancer today. In addition to funding research, the Foundation through its affiliates, funds community-based breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment projects for the medically underserved.
