What Sam said about FPD&R...

" We need to modernize the system, and we need to put ourselves in a position to establish the policies and answer directly for them. " Sam Adams, August 10, 2005, The Oregonian
The Fire and Police Disability and Retirement Fund (FPD&R) has been a hot issue around City Hall the past couple of days. City Council, in an effort led by Sam and Commissioner Saltzman, decided to form a committee to review the FPD fund in January 2005. There has lately been talk about having City Council ask voters this fall to consider amendments to the section of the City Charter that addresses the FPD&R.

Sam, don't vote to put Erik and Randy's proposal on the fall ballot. We've spent $200,000 of our money on outside experts to inform the citizen commission that you and council convened. Let's let it do its job. Erik has had the Fire Bureau for at least a year I believe, and Randy was a member of the FPD&R board. Both had plenty of time to gain public input and develop reform proposals, but the reality is that neither acted until Commissioner Saltzman and the Oregonian made a stink about it.
The FPD&R serves an incredibly important function and costs taxpayers dearly. Let's not rush into a reform, especially when Council has already set the ball rolling.
I know that you're commitment to reform on this issue. You said so during your campaign. Let's do it right.

You got to admire Sam's political savvy. On another important issue, he manages to position himself as the key swing voter.
