Cashier: Portland’s 4th Most Common Job

Portland City Commissioner Sam Adams to work shift as cashier at Mavericks Fitness club; part of his “100-Hour Pledge” to highlight need for more family-wage jobs

WHAT: Saying, “we need to create more family-wage jobs,” Portland City Commissioner Sam Adams summer continues his 100 hours of work at Portland’s most common jobs and the area’s lowest paying jobs.

Last Friday he worked an afternoon shift at Burgerville. Adams’ next job is as a cashier at Mavericks Fitness club in Northwest Portland.

“Mavericks is a locally-owned business in a cutthroat industry,” says Adams. “It treats its workers well, but is up against national athletic chains and it can only afford to pay its workers so much.”

“Local median family incomes are falling, costs continue to rise, individual and family prosperity is getting more difficult for Portlanders to achieve,” Adams says. “These trends are true for many cities, but we are not working hard enough locally to change them. I’m bringing attention to the issue by working at the most common jobs in the Portland area, jobs that coincidently are the lowest paying.”

“While Mavericks is a good example of a successful business, with the cost of living increasing and the median family income dclining, workers continue to find prosperity difficult to achieve,” Adams noted. “My goal is to make prosperity a reality for all Portlanders. In my effort, I will apply what I’ve learned visiting 114 businesses in my first 100 days. I will also apply what I hope to learn from my Portland Area Economic Dashboard and from my 100 hours to help our city.”

WHEN: 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Friday, July 15

WHERE: 2025 NW Overton St., Portland, OR 97209

BACKGROUND: Adams’ 100-Hour Pledge is second part of his effort to help increase Portland’s individual and family prosperity. During the first phase, Adams spent his first 100 days in office visiting more than 100 Portland-area businesses, offering his help and asking for their advice on how to improve Portland’s economy.

Adams is now working with economists and local business owners, labor leaders, and citizens, on a Portland Area Economic Dashboard, a project to set the first ever goals for business success and individuals and families prosperity.
