BLOG: "...if it isn't City Commissioner Sam Adams 'slumming' with us in North Portland!?"

It’s Saturday and I am luxuriating: Enjoying the newspapers, eating at one of my favorite neighborhood breakfast spots. Scrambled eggs and diced ham, cottage cheese, whole wheat toast and iced tea with cream, yea baby!
I am engrossed in an article about the latest tidbits regarding allegations that Karl Rove, President Bush's top strategist, leaked the name of a CIA operative to Time magazine. This story is a real barn burner!
Suddenly, I hear a voice loud enough for the whole restaurant to notice, "Well now, if it isn't City Commissioner Sam Adams 'slumming' with us in North Portland!?"
I look up. I don't recognize the man's face and he isn't smiling.
In a flash, my instinct is to rise up and defend North Portland’s honor. I think, "Slumming!" Are you calling my neighborhood a, "Slum?"
Instead, I say, "Hi, you are joking right?"
He replies, "No, I recognize you from the newspapers?"
"Well I am Sam, but I live here, too," I say.
"Really?" he says. "I thought you live in the Pearl."
"No, I live just up the street on North McClellan."
Seemly deflated, he shrugs and abruptly turns around and sits at the counter. I overhear him say to the woman next to him, “Mom, that’s that Sam Adams guy from city hall, I didn’t know he lives in our neighborhood.”
I do.

I'm always proud to see our NoPo logo gracing a wall in city hall or giving Sam a bad case of hat-hair.
We were looking for our 100 Days posters at:
