MEDIA ADVISORY

Adams to be asked, “What carousel is my luggage arriving on?”

Portland City Commissioner Sam Adams to work in Portland’s 11th most common job, customer service representative (at PDX)

WHAT: “Portland must improve its median family income by creating more family-wage jobs,” Commissioner Sam Adams says as he continues his 100 hours of work at Portland’s most common jobs.

In the past month, Adams has worked as a groundskeeper, prep cook, laborer, fast food worker, and cashier. Last Friday, he worked as a retail salesperson for Classique Floors in southeast Portland. Next, Adams will work as a customer service representative for one of the city’s largest employers: Port of Portland. Adams must be prepared to answer several questions, including, “Where do the hotel taxis’ pick-up?” and “What kind of ID do I need in order to travel?”

“Customer service representative is the 11th most common job in Portland, and the Port of Portland needs them to run smoothly,” noted Adams. “The Port treats its workers well, but not all customer service representatives are so lucky. Forbes magazine recently wrote that Portland’s local incomes are not keeping up with our rising cost of living. When it comes to embracing the facts about the ongoing cost-of-living-squeeze in Portland, ‘denial’ is a river that flows strongly, swiftly, and deeply through our city. Putting the spotlight on Portland’s working poor is the purpose behind my 100-Hour Pledge.

“Prosperity should not be just a dream for the middle class,” Adams stated. “We must ask ourselves what kind of city we want to live in. Portland should be able to support its middle class residents. For me, that means providing a quality education, fostering business success, and creating family-wage jobs.”

WHEN: 2 pm to 8 p.m., Friday, July 29

WHERE: 7000 NE Airport Way, Portland, OR 97218

Background on 100-Hour Pledge
Adams’ 100-Hour Pledge is the second part of his effort to help increase Portland’s individual and family prosperity. During the first phase, Adams spent his first 100 days as a City Commissioner visiting more than 100 Portland-area businesses, offering his help and asking for their advice on how to improve Portland’s economy.

Adams is now working with economists and local business owners, labor leaders, and citizens on a Portland Area Economic Dashboard, a project to set the first ever goals for business success and individual and family prosperity.
