Vote_1On June 17, the Oregon State Senate voted to approve House Bill 3441. Commissioner Adams led the City of Portland's effort to change a 1963 Oregon State Legislature bill that prevents the participation of citizens on the budget committee of large municipalities.  Sam believes expanding the Portland Budget Committee to include citizens will ensure a community voice in the city budget process and will broaden the City of Portland’s effort to promote open and transparent government proceedings.  The opportunity of citizens to vote in the budget process will add greater fiscal accountability while also bringing more diversity of thought and experience to the committee.

Expand_budget_061305_3The Oregon House of Representatives passed HB 3441 on April 26, 2005, by a vote of 59 to 0 (1 representative was absent).  With the approval of both chambers of the state legislature, the next step for HB 3441 is to be officially signed into law by Governor Kulongoski.  Click here to send your appreciation to the state legislators for their support.  View the memo Commissioner Adams provided to the Senate Rules Committee.
