Mary Jo (who you can also call MJ) is the contact on Commissioner Adam’s staff for issues that pertain to Good Government. She volunteered for Sam’s campaign shortly after moving to Portland from West Chester, Pennsylvania, in September 2004. From a young age, Mary Jo enjoyed reading political biographies and playing sports. Mary Jo’s love of politics and athletics led her to Brown University where she studied political theory and was a goalkeeper for the Brown Women’s Soccer team.

After receiving her degree in 2002, Mary Jo moved to Charleston, South Carolina, and served as a corpsmember and a team leader in the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC). For two years, she completed a variety of service projects which included: mentoring elementary school students in Summerville, South Carolina; Long Leaf pine tree preservation in Lake Charles, Louisiana; building houses in Anniston, Alabama; and removing invasive exotic plant species in Big Pine Key, Florida.

The NCCC taught Mary Jo the importance of treasuring every new experience.  This is why she is particularly happy to live in a city that offers an array of new opportunities to live and grow.  She is thrilled to be a part of Sam’s team and to learn more about Portland.
