As a Senior Policy Director, Maria Thi Mai represents Commissioner Sam Adams on issues related to Neighborhoods, Environment, Sustainability, Parks and Utilities. Maria brings to City Hall more than 15 years of public service and a decade of neighborhood activism. From spearheading neighborhood planning efforts to managing public involvement activities for projects such as President Clinton’s Forest Plan, Maria tries to create common ground for all stakeholders. She is a collaborator with heart who assures that all feel heard and respected.

Her professional experiences include the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and her most recent employer,Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. It was here that she managed a well-funded environmental education program including training for tidepool naturalists at Seal Rock State Park. Maria values funding sources that help connect people more personally to their natural and social environment.

Born in Saigon and orphaned until the age of three, Maria was adopted by an American couple who relocated every two years until Maria graduated from high school. She gratefully has made Oregon her home for the past 25 years -  including 10 years in Portland. Maria enjoys bike commuting to her home in Southwest Portland. She has fun concocting exotic dinners for friends and has a yoga practice for inner wisdom and strength.
