Gordon Johnston - Citizens' Advocate

The Office

Gordon_webGordon Johnston serves all residents of Portland as Commissioner Sam Adams’ Citizens’ Advocate. Gordon is your personal link to the Commissioner’s office. He also advocates on your behalf to city bureaus and departments. Gordon's mission is to assure residents that city government is responsive to your needs. According to The Oregonian, people feel heard when City Hall listens.

An alumnus of the University of Washington, Gordon taught English, American and European literature and advertising in rural and suburban school districts in Washington , as well as an inner city high school in Seattle. He is an internationally published author of two nonfiction books and has written articles and book reviews for Seattle newspapers and national magazines.

In Portland, Gordon was active in neighborhood associations and served on various committees for Multnomah County in monitoring social services for the Ryan White CARE ACT.

As Citizens’ Advocate on behalf of Commissioner Adams, Gordon considers his role to be that of a creative problem solver. “Life in a large city brings elements of complexity that sometimes frustrate or overwhelm the average citizen,” he says. Gordon attempts to reduce that frustration with whatever resources the bureaus and governing bodies might have to address the citizen’s problem.
