Business #70: Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Store
Warren Jimenez
Bruce Kaplan, the enterprise manager of New Avenues for Youth remarks: “Help us connect with other businesses that would be willing to employ the young people in our programs. Help us get an ice cream cart in Jamison Park.”
In 2004, the nonprofit New Avenues for Youth purchased and opened a Ben & Jerry's franchise on Yamhill between Fifth and Sixth avenues. The franchise is one of 12 partner stores, known as “social purpose enterprises” with the goal to make a profit, to employ youth and to be self-sustaining. Most of the young people have never worked before. Employees go through a five-week training program and then work in the store six to nine months before moving on to other jobs.
