008_pdx_art_museumAs we approached the Portland Art Museum, Warren and I were impressed by the North Building Project under construction to accommodate the Museum’s expanding art collection.  Everett Foster, manager of this new construction, explained that the city of Portland has not financially supported the North Building Project.  Instead, the Museum has relied on revenues from ( ).  I promised to explore ways that the City might partner with the Museum on the cost of sidewalks and utilities.

As we walked through the facility with John Buchanan, Executive Director, and Lucy Buchanan, Director of Development and Marketing, Warren and I were awed by its large scale and the unique integration of well preserved features of the original structure.   We particularly noted the grand ballroom which will feature a state of the art stage.

A current exhibit of Columbia River Native American art was explained to us by Elizabeth Martin-Calder, Tour Director.  Pre-contact art consisted of tools and hunting implements.  Post-contact item included baskets, regalia, beadwork, and baby boards.  Warren and I mused that what were once only typical items created for daily use by Native Americans, have now been elevated to art forms to be admired for their age and beauty.  We appreciated the Portland Art Museum’s preservation of these precious reminders of our area’s early history.

If you wish to learn more about the Columbia River Native American Exhibit, or how to support the North Building Project, you may visit www.portlandartmuseum.org.
