Business #1: Oregon Health and Science University

I’m here today to see the construction of the Biomedical Research building and a new patient care facility. I attended their groundbreaking two years earlier.
Both buildings are now roughed out, steel girders and concrete floors are in place, along with major plumbing and heating lines. The biomedical research center will provide cutting edge research. It will house one of only four super large Magnetic Resonance Imaging systems in the world. When the patient care facility is complete, you will be offered amenities such as state-of-the-art surgical rooms and a fabulous view of Mount St. Helens.
OHSU asked that I support approving some temporary parking for construction workers in the South Waterfront area. This is to relieve nearby neighborhoods already congested by on-street parking. I will bring this issue to City council for their decision.
As the City of Portland’s representative on the Portland Aerial Transportation, Inc board of directors I wanted to see where the Tram project will connect with the patient care building. Although cost estimates for the Tram project are unfortunately above initial projections I am seeking ways to reduce cost overruns. Initial Tram design.
As the guardian for our tax dollars, I am also concerned that too many cuts in the Tram project will result in a poor design for what could become one of Portland ’s most visible landmarks. I also want to insure that the neighborhood below the Tram site is provided a pedestrian connection over I-5 to the South Waterfront area.
OHSU is a nonprofit public corporation. It is Portland ’s largest business, with 11,000 employees fueling $2.35 billion in regional economic activity. OHSU sees 187,000 patients every year and educates 3,500 students.
