My Chief of Staff in the Mayor's Office

The position of Mayor's Chief of Staff is an important one. I should know; I held that position for eleven years to former Mayor Vera Katz. So I am pleased to announce that I have appointed Tom Miller as my chief of staff when I take office as mayor in January 2009.

Tom has done an excellent job in a very dynamic work environment as my chief of staff in my current capacity as city commissioner.  And by "dynamic" I mean fast paced. He brings a lawyer's scrutiny to the work we do and has helped orchestrate many of our team's achievements over the years.  After four years in city hall, he is well prepared to assume the role of the mayor's chief of staff.

"Sam and I have always worked well together," Miller said. "We both share a passion for Portland, we generate a lot of ideas, and challenge each other to constantly improve.  Sam has a compelling vision for the city and I love the tenacity he brings to achieving results for Portland.  It's great to work in a 'get things done' environment."

Prior to joining my city hall staff, Tom managed the general election portion of my race for city commissioner. Previous to that he served as a policy fellow for environmental justice at the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission. He is a member of the Oregon State Bar, an active skateboarder and bicycle commuter, and lives in the central city with his wife and daughter.

Grocery Bag Fee

We approve! The environment is paying a high price our profligate use of disposables, especially plastics. My family has been using canvas bags since 1972, and believe me, it can become a habit quickly. If we forget our bags when we go to the store, we simply put our groceries into the cart loosely and transfer them to the canvas bags that we keep in our car, or at our house. These bags are available really cheaply at thrift stores, and of course at fred meyer and other grocery stores. We like your idea of using part of the fee to subsidize bags for low income people. It is a completely avoidable fee and therefore cannot be considered unreasonable.

Our favorite quote, which we'd be happy to hear you use, is: There will be no business on a dead planet. The environment must come first over luxury and convenience.

Thanks so much for suggesting the plastic grocery bag fee!
