Milepost 5 is hosting a panel discussion on the call for affordable live/work spaces for artists and creatives in Portland. The discussion will focus on projects currently in the works and the challenges involved in meeting this need throughout Portland. The panel includes several developers involved in creating live/work opportunities, artists who are currently in live/work situations, artists who have had experience with live/work situations and Sam who has been a supporter and advocate for developing practical and affordable live/work spaces. Zoning needs to change to accommodate the needs of small business, artists, craftsman and sole practitioner businesses. Why is a 5 to 15 person establishment zoned the same as a 50 person establishment? "Spot zoning" if studied is what got us into the commute mess in the first place. I sure hope this becomes a topic with the Zone Map Amendment process currently underway. If people are to change their behavior + get out of their cars, the communities in which they live, need to create ways to support this behavior by eliminating the zoning bureaucracy that stands in the way. » reply
