Celebrate Portland’s Newest Green Space with Us!By The Office
The Bike Box celebrates its day in the limelight tomorrow, Thursday, March 27 at 10 a.m. Sam, along with State Representative Jackie Dingfelder and Metro Councilor Rex Burkholder host this press and community event. The green bike boxes make it safer for bicycles and cars to share the roads. The green paint highlights the bike lane and the bike box, so motorists are able to see approaching and turning cyclists. A pilot program to create 14 bike boxes at targeted intersections throughout Portland was recently approved by City Council and the first bike box was just installed at SE Hawthorne and 7th Avenue. Be sure to check out the Portland Department of Transportation website for more information. Join us in celebrating Portland's first bike box at Clever Cycles. There will be an opportunity for interviews and photos of the new bike box at the event. Press Release - The Bike Box: Get Behind It! Posted Wed, 03/26/2008 - 4:09pm.
Great job on making the bikeSubmitted by JW on Wed, 03/26/2008 - 6:41pm.
Great job on making the bike box happen! I think they will be a great asset for the city both in terms of safety but also in terms of just generating awareness to share the road. I've spent a lot of time in Europe and have seen them in action - and once drivers and cyclists figure them out here in PDX I'm sure they will be looked on as a tremendous asset. On another note can we get an update when the rest will be installed? Thanks » reply
Another taxpayer funded in-kind contribution for SamSubmitted by Terry Parker on Thu, 03/27/2008 - 9:27am.
This so-called celebration looks just like yet another in-kind contribution for the Sam Adams for Mayor campaign to get media attention that will be paid for by City taxpayers whether they like it or not. That is no different than poaching motorist paid taxes that should be used to pay for street maintenance, but instead are siphoned away for the costs of bicycle infrastructure. Bike boxes are just another taxpayer funded excuse so Adams can continue to turn a blind eye and avoid the rigorous enforcement of requiring his bicyclist buddies to comply with all traffic laws - including actually coming to a complete stop at STOP signs and waiting for traffic signals to turn green before riding through intersections. Once again Adams is showing his preferential treatment to the freeloading pedal pushers while demonstrating his personal bias and prejudices that continually are directed toward the people drive, pay the transportation taxes and to the families that choose to use their cars. All bike boxes will do is create more friction, conflict and hostility between motorists and bicyclists. Bike boxes are a congestion creating waste of taxpayer dollars!!! » reply

Sam is an IDIOTSubmitted by Gary Grim on Thu, 04/03/2008 - 7:29pm.
Sam you are a fool. Your spending money on these bike boxes that you have No right to spend. This money is to maintain roads for the people that actually pay for them and not you BIKE RIDING NAZIS that think that they should be the only ones on the road. You people have no respect for traffic laws what so ever. I witness you IDIOTS everyday blow through stop signs and lights and you complain about people in cars that don't signal when they are going to turn but do any of you? In 2 1/2 yrs of driving in this city I have seen EXACTLY 5 of you do it. If you want green boxes get your local bike club to take up donations for them and leave the money that comes from vehicle licenses and fuel taxes alone. When you start paying your own way then I will respect your space or yield to you but until then you can bite me!!!!!!!! » reply
Cycling infrastructure helps all Portland residentsSubmitted by Charlie on Mon, 04/21/2008 - 10:07pm.
First, many who ride bikes also own a car, pay tax, etc. so the idea that there's freeloading involved is simply fiction. While bad seeds exist, there are plenty of law abiding cyclists who are simply choosing to avoid the expense and impact of driving. As a cyclist, I cringe when I see an inconsiderate cyclist as they give me a bad name. Just as you cannot control someone who is speeding in their car, I cannot control others actions. For the motorist, more cyclists means more open parking spaces and not as much motor traffic clogging surface streets. So whether you want cycling infrastructure to keep your bike commute safe and civilized or you want your motorized commute to be quick and easy we all benefit from this. The most cost effective way to keep our streets moving is to support getting people out of their cars. It's a real bargain. It's truly a win-win if one looks at the big picture. Sam has the right idea. I pay taxes (plenty of them, believe me) and I want the boxes. » reply

Great Idea
The Bike Box is a great idea. Safety is the number one concern of most cyclists.
I hope this will bring awareness to safety issues.
We need to get more people to stop driving their cars and start biking to work. The timing is right with the nice weather coming soon in Spring/Summer.
