Gay Straight Alliances of the Portland Metro area held their annual Night of Noise in City Hall's south atrium on April 18, 2007, hosted by Commissioner Adams. .... The event lived up to its name, with a high-octane rock band and an impromptu, but supervised, mosh pit ramping up the decibel level.
The Night of Noise follows the national Day of Silence, which brings attention to anti-gay bullying, harassment and discrimination in schools. Students and their allies are quiet all day to protest their being silenced by an atmosphere of discrimination that does not allow them to be who they are. .... In its 11th year, the Day of Silence is a project of GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network) and is one of the largest student-led actions in the country.
In addition to a statewide GSA Network, the Portland Metro network estimates that there about 40 GSA's in the metro area. .... SMYRC (Sexual Minorities Youth Resource Council) provides meeting and event facilities, as well as licensed supervision, for the Portland metro area groups.
