Planning for Portland's Gateway IslandBy Jesse Beason
Hayden Island has both unique assets and faces distinct challenges as an island community: one way on and off the island; underdeveloped riverfront property; continuous native habitat; and rare deep channel river access. For these reasons and in light of the Columbia River Crossing Project's opportunity and impact on Hayden Island, City Council approved Sam's proposal to fund and initiate the planning process to develop the East Hayden Island Neighborhood Plan. In addition, in January the Bureau of Planning will begin the community-wide discussion about the future of West Hayden Island. Related Documents

Hayden Island is grateful
Hayden Island would be clogged with big-box traffic and stuck for 50 years with a dysfunctional street grid if it was not for Sam Adams and his staffers Warren Jimenez and Jesse Beason.
They did not have to step up to the plate for us -- no one else has since we were annexed to the City in the mid-1980s.
This time big time city hall lobbyists tried to stop us, Wal-Mart tried to stop us, the Mayor thought about opposing us but Sam pushed forward with us.
Now, we got Jantzen Beach Super Center to establish a street grid through their property that will connect an emerging street grid on the remainder of the island. And we have a planning process underway to figure out how to become the island what want.
Thank you.
