An Open Letter to PortlandersBy Sam Adams
Dear Portlander, As you have probably seen in the media, I have been the target of a nasty smear by a would-be political opponent. I will not dignify the substance of this smear by repeating it - if you read the accounts you will see there is no foundation to it. The reason is simple: it is untrue. This kind of ugly politicking may be commonplace in other cities and at the national level, but Portland and Oregon largely has been blessedly free of it. It saddens me that it has been introduced here, and I have faith that Portlanders' rejection of it will mean that this incident is an anomaly. About this attempted smear, here is what I want to say. I have in the past, and I will in the future, respond to people who reach out to me for help and advice. This is especially true when it comes to young people. Growing up in Newport and Eugene, Oregon I remember when I was a teenager and I had nobody who I felt I could talk to at a time I desperately needed someone to give me advice and perspective about coming to terms with being gay. I came through it. Not everyone does. Gay youth suicide rates, homelessness and depression are still too high. And adequate services have been lacking: Reasons why I co-founded Portland's Q Center, served on the Boards of Cascade AIDS Project, Basic Right Oregon and lobbied the state legislature in support of statewide non-discrimination laws. I didn't get into public life to allow my instinct to help others to be snuffed out by fear of sleazy misrepresentations or political manipulation. I understand the need for good judgment, and I keep within the bounds of propriety -- as I did in this case. I'm glad that people consider me as a person they could come to for help, understanding and support. I work at it. And I hope that you do too. Local programs needing mentors have long waiting lists. About my political future: this attempted smear will not deter me from serving Portland in the best way I know how. Soon I will be with sharing with you my future political plans. With warm regards, Sam Posted Tue, 09/18/2007 - 6:10am.

I rarely pay attention to this kind of attack. Or, frankly, to politicians of any kind since much of what the typical politician says is either disingenuous or a complete lie. I didn't pay attention to this one to the extent that I was unaware that any such attack existed. Until you told me about it in the open letter. Since then, out of curiosity, I looked it up. It seems to me that the "smear tactics" are intentionally deceptive and that they don't have much to do with anything other than the mere appearance of something unusual. It also seems clear that Sam will be running for mayor of Portland at the end of Mayor Potter's term. I think this potentially an exciting prospect and I hope that these allegations, assuming that they have no merit, will have no effect on the candidacy. I also hope that Sam continues to be an interesting politician. To the degree that he is able, can he please keep Portland free of corruption, graft and the failings of other American cities? As a transplant to Portland, I believe this to to be a special place the integrity of which is worth fighting for and preserving. I've seen the bumper stickers on cars that read "Keep Portland Weird". Now that I've been here long enough to know the city a little better, I think I understand what that message means. It doesn't mean "Keep Portland Weird" as in eccentric for eccentric sake or inaccessibly odd. What it means is Keep Portland Unique or Keep Portland Special. To the extent that he can be bold in that effort (because it takes bold action to fight against those that would sacrifice Portland's unique qualities for wealth and power) Sam can be one of Portland's great mayors. And one of a tradition of great public servants in Oregon. I think the only thing it takes at the end of the day is for Sam to believe that Oregon doesn't belong to us, we belong to Oregon. That means we subscribe to all the things that make this state and city unique, interesting, thoughtful and authentic. And that means we may not look or feel like other American cities. Maybe in the effort to be unique and forward thinking we'll try things that don't work. Or in the effort to preserve our heritage, we hold up certain kinds of development. Maybe we'll be a little smaller. Maybe its worth being a little smaller and thusly more precious. In the end, I hope that Sam's political ambitions don't outweigh his duty to this city and this state. Please help keep it weird. Keep it small. Keep it unique. Keep it great. » reply
Big Brother/Big SisterSubmitted by PDX Green Lantern on Tue, 09/18/2007 - 6:44am.
I am 36 years old, gay and a big brother to a 16 year-old gay male kid as part of the local Big Brother/Big Sister Program. I have made a three-year commitment to be his mentor as he finishes high school and goes on to community college. The inference that adult gay men cannot be trusted to mentor under aged gay male youth is a projection of how others might think of gay people but it is not my way of thinking. I thought we in Portland had moved beyond this outdated myth. The fact that thismyth is promoted by a gay man shows how much work we still have to do as gay men. » reply

Bob Ball is an egotistical jerk. I seem to remember that during the 2004 mayoral race that Jim Francesconi tried this sort of tactic and lost by a huge margin. Is Bob Ball so stupid that he doesn't remember that Portlanders don't go for this sort of mud slinging? I think it speaks VOLUMES about the sort of person that Ball is. I've never trusted Ball - I've always thought he was insecure, jealous and secretive. You're an inspiration, Sam - we would all do well to follow your example, put fear and mistrust aside, and be good role models and mentors to the youth of our great state. » reply

While I completely reject what appears to be nothing more than a smear tactic for political gain, I have to say that I don't know what kool-aid those of you praising Sam have been drinking. Wholly apart from this distasteful distraction, Sam is not the hero riding in a white horse. Based on my own interaction with him, I find him to be arrogant, abrasive, and abusive to those with whom he disagrees. It's Sam's way or the highway and if any of you thinks that he's "different" from other self-promoting politicians, you need to wake up. Your unnuanced adulation only encourages this kind of egotism and will corrode the good things about Portland politics as much as any smear tactics. » reply

I've met Sam and worked with him. I can't say that I've witnessed or heard of him being "abusive", but I agree with you about the other stuff you say. I just don't see it as a problem. » reply

I worked for Sam for two and a half years when he was Mayor Katz' chief of staff. Day in, day out. I thus believe I have more than just an opinion regarding this salacious gossip. I think I have an educated opinion. Sam is many things. A driven man. An exacting task master. An unapologetic promoter. I found working under him to be one of the hardest working environments of my life--and I'd been in DC for ten years, where politicians eat bowls of nails for breakfast! Sam is tough! Get it done or get off the boat! Frankly, I couldn't handle the pace. Sam is a very attractive, smart, and charismatic person. A lot of people are attracted to him. Including young people who seek his counsel. But no, no way. I just don't see any attraction like that moving to "an underage affair," much less first base. Sam just wouldn't go there. Not because it's a "bad political decision." Not because he's "too smart." He wouldn't do it because he just wouldn't. Just like you and I wouldn't do it. Sorry Bromo, but you missedSubmitted by Briar on Wed, 09/19/2007 - 3:39pm.
Sorry Bromo, but you missed the point. Talking to someone about coming to terms with their sexual orientation has nothing to do with sex. As a 40 year old, heterosexual man, you wouldn't have much (if anything) to relate to a 17 year old girl in terms of social issues she's facing...because you've never been a 17 year old girl. Sam, however, is someone who had been through the coming out process and had a lot to offer this young man, i.e. direct life experiences that Beau's parents, teachers, or any other non-gay man wouldn't be able to directly relate to. I think it's ridiculous that anyone try to condemn Sam for being an elected official that actually DOES something good for others, instead of just talking about it. » reply

The Oregonian printed my letter to the editor this morning with some editing. Here is the letter I submitted: As an openly gay former elected official, I was stunned by the report in this morningâs Oregonian about the rumors being spread about Commissioner Sam Adams. I have known Commissioner Adams both professionally and socially for several years now and believe his character to be above reproach. I can sympathize with the unique position Commissioner Adams is in as an elected official to the people of Portland but also as a defacto representative of the GLBT community. It makes you consider all of your actions more closely due to the added responsibility of representing a community that is often mischaracterized or maligned. I too availed myself of the opportunity to mentor young people, and I too understood that there was always the risk of it being rumored to be something more than it was. Sick minds like to imagine sick scenarios that couldnât be further from the truth. I am confident that Portlanders will recognize Mr. Ballâs efforts for what they areâa craven attempt to smear the character of a perceived political rival and respected City leader. Mr. Ballâs behavior is further reprehensible for perpetuating the unsupportable myth that gay men are more likely than their heterosexual counterparts to engage in sexual activities with minors. Mr. Ball should be ashamed of himself. I hope none of this will cause Commissioner Adams to rethink the incredible work he does for the City, the GLBT community and for young people. » reply

Rarely is a story such as this fabricated out of thin air. As an aspiring middle school teacher, I have learned that there is always some truth to every lie. I am not saying Mr. Adams had a sexual relationship with this boy, but its professionalism is highly in question. I am a firm believer that NO ONE has the right to help a minor "come to terms with his sexuality," except for his or her parents. Period. End of discussion. If, as a parent, I knew that one of my children were being "mentored" by an openly homosexual man; and that he was teaching my child that a questionable [to most] lifestyle is acceptable, I would be beyond appalled. WOW, there are sure a lot of bigots in this town? Are we going to have a cross burning next? (And I foolishly thought that the planners were the only Nazis in town.) Sam, keep up your good work except streetcars, light rail, high density and urban renewal.) Oh, and please quit increasing traffic congestion. Thanks » reply
Who are you???Submitted by Shannon on Tue, 10/09/2007 - 2:05pm.
It amazes me that there are people around like you. I am saddened daily by the likes of you and your kind. Open your heart and your mind. It is individuals like you who bring war and hatred to our world. Thumber's rule if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all...or at least have a mature conversation about your feeling and not one that is bigoted and hateful. Maybe your scare yourself when you look in the mirror because your really not sure who you are. Good things don't come to people like you so good luck!!! » reply
