I frequently drive to Seattle and never really have issues unless it is at rush hour. I think that the biggest problem is SW Washington's approach to land use planning and a lack of coordination between the two parts of the region. I am concerned that if we build a bigger bridge and more lanes that they will just fill with more cars than that can handle and we will be in an endless loop. Many of the small towns in SW WA are expecting to DOUBLE in size...and I don't see why we should make that easier on people who want to double dip by fleeing income taxes in OR and not paying sales tax in WA. Street cars, light rail and an attention to modes other than cars IS balance. And it's about time that we spend our tax dollars for transportation in a balanced way instead of subsidizing autos and auto dependent development » reply

The paragraph comes about as a conclusion to a previous section describing the limits to travelling placed on the citizens of Utopia; Hytholoday spends some time explaining the nature of this particular set of rules, the reasons for them, and the repercussions of any disobedience to them. Debauchery indeed, even the threat of or potential for debauchery is criminal. Any one who would assert the right to a thing as his must be in possession of it as an object. » reply

Transportation Budget Priorities
I live in the Southeast side not far from the Ross Island Bridge. I would like to see all city transportation monies directed toward providing more lanes on I-5 and an expanded I-5 bridge between Portland and Vancouver. We have enough streetcars and lightrail. I'd rather ride a bike or walk than take a streetcar or train around the city. More streetcars and trains do me absolutely no good. Increasing lanes on I-5 through Portland central, however, would improve the ability to get freight in and out and reduce peoples time spent in traffic. Moving cars/trucks don't put out as much pollution and don't consume as much fuel as those sitting idle in traffic.
PLEASE TAKE A BALANCED APPROACH, and earmark more monies for improving car travel in and out of Portland central. Even us bike riders and walkers like to head for the hills sometimes using a car.
