Taking a "Time-Out" to Plan Hayden Island's Future

Hayden IslandHayden IslandA series of proposed developments on Hayden Island created a tipping point for consideration of a temporary delay on new commercial growth.

Hayden Island, which has never had a neighborhood plan, deserves the opportunity to create their vision for their neighborhood.

The development delay will allow time for the community to develop their plan and allow time for the $2 billion dollar Columbia River Crossing Project to decide on alignment. Further development on the island could significantly impact a successful outcome on this project.

Fundamentally, good planning is good for business:

Good planning provides time and diversity of opinion to flourish in an environment that leads to good, community-supported outcomes.

Portland has a long, prestigious history of planning for good development and good business:

  • 1972 Downtown Plan
  • 1990's Pearl District
  • 2000's south Waterfront

In each of the above instance, coordination between infrastructural investments and commerce create a future for each of these districts.
