President of Ireland to Visit PortlandBy The Office
The President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, will dedicate the new Oregon Irish Potato Famine Memorial 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 13th, at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery. This will be the first visit to Portland by a serving President of Ireland. The Oregon Irish Potato Famine Memorial was commissioned by Portland's Ancient Order of Hibernians, to construct a Memorial in Portland to those Irish who died of hunger and disease during the Great Irish Potato Famine, An Gorta Mor, and to commemorate the dedication and commitment of those Irish who made that great trek to the West, and lived out the remainder of their lives in Oregon. The Memorial is a Celtic High Cross modeled on the ancient Cross of the Scriptures from Clonmacnoise, County Offaly, Ireland, which was carved in 916 A.D. The newly remastered replica was hand carved in Donegal Town, Ireland, by Brendan Mc Gloin, an Irish stone sculptor and artist. For more information, contact Portland's Hibernians at 503-701 9726 or e-mail OregonIrishMemorial@gmail.com. Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery Posted Mon, 12/08/2008 - 4:40pm.
