Rain barrels like this one keep stormwater on site and can be used to water plantsRain barrels like this one keep stormwater on site and can be used to water plantsAs testimony that even an off-line neophyte like me can register "on-line" for Portland's Clean River Rewards I gave it a go and whah lah voila, 5 minutes later I was deemed qualified. This is good news because it means I also qualify for the 12 month retroactive credit since I've been a ratepayer in my house for at least a year. Now, it's your turn.

Beginning today, you can register on-line for your stormwater discount. It's as easy as typing www.Cleanriverrewards.com Your registration will be posted immediately to your City utility account with your discount and retroactive credit appearing on your next bill.

If you want to register by phone, call: 503-823-1371. If you prefer to complete the registration by hand, call the number listed above and select the first menu option and a packet will be mailed to you. And for additional help on ways to manage stormwater runoff, classes, or technical information select the second menu option at the telephone number listed above.

Remember, the more we manage our stormwater on-site, the longer we extend the life of our big pipe which will be a savings to us all over time.

High cost of plastic drums (rain barrels)

I hope that the person who bought the white plastic drum pictured in the article didn't pay over a hundred bucks for it. Companys who buy drums, drill a couple holes in them and turn right around and mark them up 90% or more are ripping people off in my opinion. Now dont get me wrong, I'm not against the companys that sell them for a reasonable price just the ones that jack the prices up on products that take little time or money to put together. Now if somebody wants to have a plastic drum next to their home to save rain water thats their choice. I dont know if having one or more would help or hinder your chances, if you ever thought of selling your home. Now we all know that saving rain water is indeed a wonderful thing for our environment no matter what you choose to harvest it in, but if you knew of other options would you have chosen just a plastic drum? Only you can answer that. For those of you who would like another option take alook at this companys website at www.rainbarrelman.com they have put alot of thought, time and money in the building of these barrels. Also, dont forget that you have to manage the overflows on your rain barrels as well, in order to recieve the discounts on your stormwater management charges, when signing up for the Clean River Rewards Program.
