I am 36 years old, gay and a big brother to a 16 year-old gay male kid as part of the local Big Brother/Big Sister Program. I have made a three-year commitment to be his mentor as he finishes high school and goes on to community college. The inference that adult gay men cannot be trusted to mentor under aged gay male youth is a projection of how others might think of gay people but it is not my way of thinking. I thought we in Portland had moved beyond this outdated myth. The fact that thismyth is promoted by a gay man shows how much work we still have to do as gay men.
