Transportation System
Just some input on Transportation priorities.
I live on a street that has never been paved. It was annexed into the city from
Multnomah County in 1986. It runs for 2 blocks east to west from the Gymnasium
at Binnsmead Middle School. It is a main thoroughfare for traffic to and from
the school, both pedestrian and vehicular. Children are subjected to being
splashed, forced into the hedges and frightened by the cars and school buses
that travel through the deep holes and ruts at speeds to high even for a paved
street. At night it becomes a haven for prostitution customers and drug dealers
from 82nd Avenue because of it's secluded and abandoned appearance. It has
become a dump for unwanted furniture and tires. Children walking to and from
school have to pass through discarded condoms, needles and beer bottles.
Neighbors have planted hedges and trees in the right of way to keep the traffic
away from their property and the city denies requests to have them removed. The
city purchased a right-of-way to extend the avenue south in the 70's along with
'spite strips' along the borders of the neighboring properties which now can
never be used because permits have been granted for Section 8 housing spanning
the space between the avenues being built farther down the way. My home is
constantly infiltrated with the dust on dry days and the water from the 'wakes'
of the traffic flows into my driveway and garage and yard, yet I have to pay the
same taxes as the people around the corner who enjoy sidewalks, curbs, pavement
and gutters. Let it be a priority to be fair, to ensure or enhance the safety of
the school children and to make all Portland streets presentable and up to
standard.
