Council Urges Inclusion of Public Works Projects in Federal Stimulus Plan

With the current economic downturn the City of Portland has joined with Congressman Earl Blumenauer, Senator Ron Wyden and other members of our Congressional delegation to urge Washington to pass a public- works-based stimulus bill.   Its passage could create more than 8,000 jobs in Portland.

Public works projects, from  street repairs to public facility contstruction or sewer reconstructions, enable cities to ensure that their infrastructure is safe and reliable. These projects also produce good family wage jobs and have a positive ripple effect on the economy. In order to provide our Congressional delegation with a coordinated, direct message to take to Washington the City has put together a list of priority projects that we would like to see funded as quickly as possible.

The city has picked projects that address crucial infrastructure problems. Additionally, projects have been prioritized that create jobs, can be started quickly, and have a local labor match. These projects fall into eight categories, and would cost $847 million dollars. From this initial investment, it is estimated that $1.32 billion dollars would be injected into the local economy. Most importantly, these projects would create 8,848 jobs. This is exactly the type of investment needed to jump start Portland's economy.

So to Senator Wyden, Rep. Blumenauer, and the rest of the Congressional team: Good luck in Washington!
